Monitoring Breath pentane: an indicator ......

Twenty swines were randomly divided into two groups: (I)control group, (II)propofol group. Exhaled breath samples (20ml) were taken from the animals at washout 90min,105 min,120 min, ischemia 0 min,15 min,30 min reperfusion 0 min,15 min, 30 min to measure pentane by solid-phase microextraction(SPME)[2] in GC-MS(Shimadzu 2010, Japan).. Blood samples from inferior vena cava (5 ml) were taken at ischemia 0 min,15 min,30 min, reperfusion 0 min,15 min, 30 min. At the end of the experiment liver tissue samples were obtained. AST , ALT, SOD and MDA plasma levels were measured in the blood samples.
Data are shown in (Mean±SD).We consider the three different time points of washout, ischemia, reperfusion as a whole respectively. In the control group, pentane peaked right after reperfusion in breath (5.43±2.50 ppb) and blood(7.25±4.55 ppb)then decreased gradually, the operation of ischemia and reperfusion significantly influence the levels of pentane compared to basal level(p<0.05)( By 2-dimentional repeated measure ANOVA).The operation in propofol group is not statistical significant. (p>0.05).Pentane peaked right after reperfusion in breath (3.04±0.86ppb) and blood (5.64±2.46ppb) .
       1) Pentane can indicate the level of the liver injury during ischemia-reperfusion,2) Pentane was prior to serum enzyme elevation, 3) Propofol may attenuate the injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion.
