ABSTRACT

Difficult airway has been identified as a major contributory factor to anesthetic related morbidity and mortality. In a “can't intubate/can't ventilate” situation, effective emergency methods of oxygenation and ventilation must be rapidly taken. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Task Force on the management of a difficult airway states that availability of equipment for the management of a difficult airway is associated with reduced complications and also recommends the general types of equipment that should be stocked on a difficult airway kit. There are commercially available trays specifically designed for certain aspects of airway management. In American university teaching hospital and major medical centers, a comprehensive difficult airway cart according to the preferences of different anesthesiologists has been equipped in the operating room. Although types of equipment equipped in the difficult airway cart were different between the different hospital, all items that ASA difficult airway management algorithm requires are included. In this article, we list the common types of item that should be equipped in a difficult airway cart. Our purposes are not to mention all possible airway management equipments or to provide a standard allocation. We hope this listing will help others formulate and organize their own difficult airway cart based on the institutional tradition and practical conditions，experiences and the preferences of different anesthesiologists and so on.
